THE SCORNED COMING KINGDOM
by Pastor Mike Fortune
December 16, 2017

  1. Jesus' kingdom has always been scorned (Luke 18:9; Luke 2:33-35; Luke 8:53; Mark 15:31-32; Acts 17:16-17,32; 2 Peter 3:3-4; Proverbs 3:34 NKJV)
  2. Religious people can miss it (Luke 18:10-12; Matthew 6:5; Matthew 2:1-4; James 4:6)
  3. Humble sinners will be saved (Luke 18:13; Matthew 1:20-21; 1 John 3:4 KJV; Romans 5:12 NKJV; Psalm 51:5; Hebrews 10:14; Philippians 1:6; Galatians 2:21; Hebrews 2:17 & Matthew 1:21; Matthew 9:9; Luke 19:2,9; Luke 18:14; 1 Peter 5:5)
Luke 18:9
9 Then Jesus told this story to some who had great confidence in their own righteousness and scorned everyone else.

Luke 2:33-35 (Scripture)
33 Jesus' parents were amazed at what was being said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them, and he said to Mary, the baby's mother, "This child is destined to cause many in Israel to fall, but he will be a joy to many others. He has been sent as a sign from God, but many will oppose him. 35 As a result, the deepest thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your very soul."

Luke 8:53
53 But the crowd laughed at him because they all knew she had died.

Mark 15:31-32
31 The leading priests and teachers of religious law also mocked Jesus. "He saved others," they scoffed, "but he can't save himself! 32 Let this Messiah, this King of Israel, come down from the cross so we can see it and believe him!" Even the men who were crucified with Jesus ridiculed him.

Acts 17:16-17,32
16 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was deeply troubled by all the idols he saw everywhere in the city. 17 He went to the synagogue to reason with the Jews and the God-fearing Gentiles, and he spoke daily in the public square to all who happened to be there. 32 When they heard Paul speak about the resurrection of the dead, some laughed in contempt, but others said, "We want to hear more about this later."

2 Peter 3:3-4
3 Most importantly, I want to remind you that in the last days scoffers will come, mocking the truth and following their own desires. 4 They will say, "What happened to the promise that Jesus is coming again? From before the times of our ancestors, everything has remained the same since the world was first created."

Proverbs 3:34 NKJV
34 Surely He scorns the scornful, but gives grace to the humble.

Luke 18:10-12
10 Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: "I thank you, God, that I am not a sinner like everyone else. For I don't cheat, I don't sin, and I don't commit adultery. I'm certainly not like that tax collector! 12 I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income."

Matthew 6:5
5 When you pray, don't be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them. I tell you the truth, that is all the reward they will ever get.

Matthew 2:1-4
1 Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the reign of King Herod. About that time some wise men from eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking, 2 "Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him." 3 King Herod was deeply disturbed when he heard this, as was everyone in Jerusalem. 4 He called a meeting of the leading priests and teachers of religious law and asked, "Where is the Messiah supposed to be born?"

James 4:6
6 But he gives us even more grace to stand against such evil desires. As the Scriptures say, "God opposes the proud but favors the humble."

Luke 18:13
13 But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, "O God, be merciful [ἱλάσκομαι hilaskomai] to me, for I am a sinner."

Matthew 1:20-21
20 As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. "Joseph, son of David," the angel said, "do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins [ἁμαρτία hamartia]."

1 John 3:4 (KJV)
Whosoever committeth sin (ἁμαρτία hamartia) transgresseth also the law: for sin (ἁμαρτία hamartia) is the transgression of the law.

Romans 5:12 (NKJV)
Therefore, just as through one man sin [ἁμαρτία hamartia] entered the world, and death through sin [ἁμαρτία hamartia], and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned [ἁμαρτάνω hamartanō].

Psalm 51:5
5 For I was born a sinner—yes, from the moment my mother conceived me.

Hebrews 10:14
14 For by that one offering he forever made perfect those who are being made holy.

Philippians 1:6
6 And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

Galatians 2:21
21 I do not treat the grace of God as meaningless. For if keeping the law could make us right with God, then there was no need for Christ to die.

SUMMARY SO FAR
  1. Sin(s) cannot be limited to transgression of the law (1 John 3:4)
  2. Sin(s) is first and foremost a condition not behavior (Psalm 51:5)
  3. Jesus came to save people from the condition of sin (Matthew 1:21)
  4. We are being made holy until the day Jesus returns (Hebrews 10:14; Philippians 1:1,6)
  5. Or Christ died in vain (Galatians 2:21)
Hebrews 2:17 & Matthew 1:21
17 Therefore, it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his brothers and sisters, so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then he could offer a sacrifice that would take away [ἱλάσκομαι hilaskomai] the sins [ἁμαρτία hamartia] of the people. 21 And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins [ἁμαρτία hamartia].

Matthew 9:9
9 As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at his tax collector's booth. "Follow me and be my disciple," Jesus said to him. So Matthew got up and followed him.

Luke 19:2,9
2 There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become very rich. 9 Jesus responded, "Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham."

Luke 18:14
14 I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."

1 Peter 5:5
5 And all of you, serve each other in humility, for "God opposes the proud but favors the humble."
