THE DEATH DELUSION

Bono Who Is Jesus?

  1. People have always been confused about death (Luke 9:7-9; Genesis 3:4; Acts 2:34; John20:17; Luke 24:38-40; 1 Timothy 6:15; 2 Corinthians 11:14; Revelation 16:14; Exodus 7:11; Revelation 13:13; 1 Corinthians 15:22-23)
  2. Even sincere followers of Jesus (Luke 9:18-19; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)
  3. Jesus holds the keys of death (Luke 1:20: John 11:11-13; 23-25; Revelation 1:18)

All Scripture from NLT unless otherwise indicated

Luke 9:7-9

7 When Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, heard about everything Jesus was doing, he was puzzled. Some were saying that John the Baptist had been raised from the dead. 8 Others thought Jesus was Elijah or one of the other prophets risen from the dead. 9 "I beheaded John," Herod said, "so who is this man about whom I hear such stories?" And he kept trying to see him.

Genesis 3:4 (NKJV)

4 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die."

Acts 2:34 (NKJV)

34 For David did not ascend into the heavens...

John 20:17 (NKJV)

17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father..."

Luke 24:38-40

38 "Why are you frightened?" he asked. "Why are your hearts filled with doubt? 39 Look at my hands. Look at my feet. You can see that it's really me. Touch me and make sure that I am not a ghost, because ghosts don't have bodies, as you see that I do." 40 As he spoke, he showed them his hands and his feet.

1 Timothy 6:15

16 He alone has immortality.

2 Corinthians 11:14

14 But I am not surprised! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.

Revelation 16:14

14 They are demonic spirits who work miracles and go out to all the rulers of the world.

Exodus 7:11

11 Then Pharaoh called in his own wise men and sorcerers, and these Egyptian magicians did the same thing with their magic. 12 They threw down their staffs, which also became serpents!

Revelation 13:13

13 He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men. 14 And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by those signs.

1 Corinthians 15:22-23

22 Just as everyone dies because we all belong to Adam, everyone who belongs to Christ will be given new life. 23 But there is an order to this resurrection: Christ was raised as the first of the harvest; then all who belong to Christ will be raised when he comes back.

Luke 9:18-19

18 One day Jesus left the crowds to pray alone. Only his disciples were with him, and he asked them, "Who do people say I am?" 19 "Well," they replied, "some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say you are one of the other ancient prophets risen from the dead."

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 (NKJV)

13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. 15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.

Luke 1:20

20 Then he asked them, "But who do you say I am?" Peter replied, "You are the Messiah sent from God!"

John 11:11-13; 23-25

11 Then he said, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but now I will go and wake him up." 12 The disciples said, "Lord, if he is sleeping, he will soon get better!" 13 They thought Jesus meant Lazarus was simply sleeping, but Jesus meant Lazarus had died. 23 Jesus told her, "Your brother will rise again." 24 "Yes," Martha said, "he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day." 25 Jesus told her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying.

Revelation 1:18

18 I am the living one. I died, but look—I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and the grave.
