LET FREEDOM RING
by Pastor Mike Fortune
July 5, 2014

  1. You are free (1 Peter 2:16a; Leviticus 25:10 & Liberty Bell Pic; Quotes)
  2. To serve God (1 Peter 2:16b; James 1:25; Romans 6:1-2; Romans 8:11-12; Galatians 5:16)
  3. Choose wisely (1 Peter 2:16c; 1 Peter 1:18-21; Galatians 6:17)

1 Peter 2:16
16 For you are free, yet you are God's slaves, so don't use your freedom as an excuse to do evil.

1 Peter 2:16 (ERV)

Live like free people, but don't use your freedom as an excuse to do evil. Live as those who are serving God.

Leviticus 25:10
10 Proclaim freedom throughout the land for all who live there.

Thomas Paine 1776
What we obtain too cheaply, we esteem too lightly; ’tis dearness only that gives everything its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as Freedom should not be highly rated.

Ellen White re:Fugitive Slave Law of 1850

When the laws of man conflict with the word and law of God, we are to obey the latter, whatever the consequences may be. The law of our land requiring us to deliver a slave to his master, we are not to obey; and we must abide the consequences of violating this law. The slave is not the property of any man. God is his rightful master, and man has no right to take God's workmanship into his hands, and claim him as his own. - 1T201-202James 1:25
25 But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don't forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.

Romans 6:1-2
1 Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace? 2 Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it?

Romans 8:11-12
11 The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you. 12 Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do.

Galatians 5:16
16 So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won't be doing what your sinful nature craves.

1 Peter 1:18-21

18 For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And the ransom he paid was not mere gold or silver. 19 It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. 20 God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but he has now revealed him to you in these last days. 21 Through Christ you have come to trust in God. And you have placed your faith and hope in God because he raised Christ from the dead and gave him great glory.

Galatians 6:17
17 From now on...I bear on my body the scars that show I belong to Jesus.
