- Mega fear often precedes mega joy (Luke 2:8-9; Matthew 2:3,17-18)
- But mega joy trumps mega fear (Luke 2:10; Isaiah 52:7)
- And brings peace among men of good will (Luke 2:11-14; Luke 1:78-29)
Luke 2:8-14
8That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. 9Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord's glory surrounded them. They were terrified, 10but the angel reassured them. "Don't be afraid!" he said. "I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. 11The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! 12 And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger." 13Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God and saying, 14 "Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased."
Matthew 2:3
3King Herod was deeply disturbed when he heard this, as was everyone in Jerusalem.
Matthew 2:17-18
17 Herod's brutal action fulfilled what God had spoken through the prophet Jeremiah: 18 "A cry was heard in Ramah—weeping and great mourning. Rachel weeps for her children, refusing to be comforted, for they are dead."
Isaiah 52:7
7How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of the messenger who brings good news, the good news of peace and salvation, the news that the God of Zion reigns!
Luke 1:78-29
78The morning light from heaven is about to break upon us, 79to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide us to the path of peace.
